Accommodations: Settle into your graciously appointed air-conditioned room or suite with classic French decor and dark wood furniture, satellite TV, a mini-bar, a safe, an Italian marble bath, and a hairdryer. Some guest quarters have a balcony. Ask at the reception desk about safe deposit box storage. Some suites are named after famous Venetian artists and writers, and some have a terrace. The Presidential Suite is on 2 levels and features a large altana. Views from the guest quarters are variously of the narrow streets, small internal courtyards, rooftops, St. Mark's basin, the San Georgio Island, and more. TIP: For a glimpse of the Grand Canal, book a double on the 4th floor with southern exposure or a 5th-floor suite. Accommodations on the lower floors lack a view.
Dining & Entertainment: Create a feast for yourself from the delicious breakfast buffet at Salone Marco Polo, gloriously adorned with frescoes from the school of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Venetian and traditional regional specialties, scrumptious international dishes, and a wide selection of fine wines are yours to choose among at the sophisticated Canova Restaurant. It is set against the San Marco lagoon and serves lunch and dinner. The elegant Caffe Baglioni, along a small canal, is a lovely respite for a refreshing drink and light fare. Room service runs 24 hours a day. Order a Bellini, "the pink cocktail," at Harry's Bar, on the same street as the hotel. Ernest Hemingway had a corner table there.
Recreation: Explore St. Mark's Square, go on a gondola ride along the Grand Canal, experience a night at the opera at La Fenice, and marvel at the artwork on display at the Museo Correr. Visit nearby Lido Island for water sports, golf, horseback riding, and tennis. Baby-sitting and personal shopper services are available.
